Frequently Asked Questions

What is Myofunctional Therapy?
It is essentially "physical therapy for the mouth and face," using targeted exercises to correct resting posture of the tongue, lips, and jaw. The Goals are to establish nasal breathing day and night, establish proper tongue posture (lightly suctioned to the roof of your mouth), establish a proper lip seal, and swallowing in a correct pattern with no compensation.

Who can benefit?
Both children (as young as four) and adults dealing with mouth breathing, snoring, TMJ pain, teeth grinding, or improper swallowing patterns.

What age can children start?
Most children are ready around age 6. Readiness, cooperation, and motivation matter more than age alone so younger behaviourally mature children can also benefit. We also offer "mini-myo" services for children around 4-5 years old to offer initial assessment, habit building and some preliminary exercises.

How long does it take?
Results often take 6 to 12 months, with initial improvements noticed within a few weeks to months. The kicker is that the work is done at home.

Is attending appointments all I need to do?

No, that is actually only a small piece of a typically very complex puzzle. Consider me your "personal trainer" for your mouth. I will assess your form and function, give you the work to do at home and cheer you on! I will assess your progress and give new exercises and activities as you develop.

Is home practice required?
Yes. Daily home practice is necessary for progress. If you are not able/willing to commit to 2-3 min 3x a day for active exercises and 10-20 min. (some sessions) for passive exercises then it is not recommended. For children under 8 adult supervision is required for exercises.

How often are appointments?
Visits are usually spaced every few weeks, depending on age, goals, and progress.

Do I need an ENT or orthodontist first?
Sometimes. If airway obstruction or structural concerns are present, medical or dental assessment may be needed before starting therapy.

Is it covered by insurance?
Coverage varies but it is not typical. Some plans cover it, often under dental hygiene codes. It is sometimes more easily covered for children than adults. Clients are responsible to pay up front and submit to their insurance.

What is the cost?
Sessions in BC can range from  approximately $1500-$3000+ and typically are 12-13 sessions. Breathe Well Myo Foundations programming are customized to each patient and range from $1800-1850 depending on payment plan preference .

Can it help with snoring/sleep apnea?
Yes, it can reduce snoring and mild-to-moderate sleep apnea by strengthening muscles to keep the airway open. This does NOT mean you will not need to continue with a CPAP if you have been prescribed one but it can improve quality and tone of muscles

Do I need a referral?
A referral is not usually mandatory, though it is encouraged to work in conjunction with orthodontist, dentists and other professionals.
